Waves - a poem written by Karen during 2020 lockdown

WAVES
Drifting, floating, a gentle sway
Dark clouds in the distance, far, far away.
Perhaps they’re getting closer? No, no way!
It will all blow over before we hit that day.
Disbelief, dread, despair, determination,
A tumult of emotions spread across the nation.
Bombarded by pictures I know I must see
Stilled by the fear that “this could be me”!
Waves through the glass say hello or goodbye
Watching the children, I mustn’t cry!
Happy to see but longing to touch
Craving the hugs that I need so much.
Calmed by nature, the trees and the deer
Hearing the birds; they seem so near.
Stand on the shore, smell the sea
Inhale deeply, glad to be me.
Brain waves, sea waves, anxiety, calm;
Tossed in the maelstrom, searching for balm.
Bare feet on sand, more solid than ground
Horizons of hope for the future we’ve found.
